Pietro Vernazza contributes to the Swiss HIV Cohort Study in a significant manner since more than 20 years.
He founded the SHCS centre St.Gallen.
His creative ideas always stimulated the scientific activity of our network and he was often the link to Federal administrations and patient organizations.
Pietro Vernazza stepped now back from the scientific board and handed the representation of the St. Gallen outpatient clinic over to Patrick Schmid.
The Swiss HIV Cohort Study (SHCS), established in 1988, is a nationwide prospective longitudinal cohort study enrolling persons with HIV in Switzerland. It is a collaboration of all Swiss university hospitals, large cantonal hospitals with affiliated laboratories, and affiliated smaller hospitals and private physicians caring for persons with HIV.
The overarching aim of the SHCS is to improve health of persons living with HIV through clinical, translational and basic science studies, and to strengthen collaborative and transdisciplinary research.
The Swiss Mother and Child HIV Cohort Study (MoCHiV) is integrated into the SHCS. It aims at preventing mother-to-child transmission and enrolls pregnant women with HIV and their children.
